Put an end to sanctuary cities
Columbia, SC -- Our cities and the mayors that lead them must obey the laws of our country. They can challenge them through the judicial system, but mayors do not have the right to ignore them without penalty, in the same way I cannot ignore a speeding ticket by pleading that the limit is too low as I exceed it. -- I applaud Attorney General Jeff Sessions for threatening to withhold federal funds for cities that do not obey federal law. If Columbia Mayor Steve Benjamin refuses to obey federal law, he should step away from his position or not be reelected should Columbia lose federal funding. -- It was stupid of the Obama administration to initially ignore federal law and stupid of Mayor Benjamin and the U.S. Conference of Mayors and its partnership with their police chiefs (many of whom are hired or fired by mayors) to take advantage of that. Let's bring some respect for the law to Columbia.......

California's chief justice says immigration enforcement at courthouses continues 'in full force'
California Chief Justice Tani G. Cantil-Sakauye on Tuesday said federal immigration officers have continued to detain immigrants at courthouses across the country "in full force" since January, reversing years of work by judges to ensure equal access to justice. -- "This is a national concern and deserves more attention in some respects because we are seeing people not come into court, not reporting to court, not reporting for services, not coming to testify," Cantil-Sakauye said in a public discussion with state Sen. Hannah-Beth Jackson (D-Santa Barbara) at the Capitol.......

Taxpayers forced to pay deportation appeals of illegals
The high costs of illegal immigrants filing deportation appeals in federal courts are paid by U.S. taxpayers, a little-known fact but a major driver in the escalation of cases that are clogging the legal docket, according to experts. -- "Aliens should not be given more rights and better conditions than U.S. citizens," said Hans von Spakovsky, an expert on immigration and a former member of the Federal Election Commission. -- Decrying the special treatment courts provide to illegals, he told a Center for Immigration Studies panel on Tuesday that unlike American citizens, undocumented immigrants don't have to pay most court costs, such as for records and transcripts, and the $110 filing fee is typically waived. -- "American taxpayers are subsidizing the appeals of all these cases," said von Spakovsky.......

Mexican troops say they seized 140 pounds of fentanyl at US border
Soldiers in northern Mexico say they have seized a surprisingly large stash of the powerful opioid fentanyl from a truck near the U.S. border. -- The Mexican Army's Second Military Zone said late Monday that soldiers at a highway checkpoint found over 140 pounds of fentanyl on Saturday packed in plastic-wrapped bricks hidden behind sheet metal in the insulated floor of a truck trailer. -- Soldiers also found three bags containing almost 30,000 pills, apparently also containing fentanyl. The driver and a youth accompanying him were detained. -- The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says fentanyl can be 50 times more potent than heroin.......

In Strange Move, DNC Knocks Trump For Lack Of Progress On Border Wall
In a strange turn of events, the Democratic National Committee is now attacking President Donald Trump for not building the border wall fast enough. -- In a Tuesday press released titled “Trump's Empty Promises On Border Wall,” the DNC wrote: “Trump has failed to deliver on his signature promise to build a border wall and have Mexico pay for it. Trump even admitted in a private conversation with Mexico that his border wall promise was ‘the least important thing.'” -- It is fairly early in the Trump administration to expect a completed border wall. Construction of new border walls and replacement fencing is set to begin in 2018. The Trump administration appears unlikely to build a wall from sea-to-sea like Trump proposed on the campaign trail.......

Trump's Merkel Moment? West Wing Dems' Plan to Keep DACA Will Increase Illegal Immigration Pull Factors
A new McClatchy report has revealed that current White House staffers including John Kelly, Ivanka Trump, and Jared Kushner are pushing the President to continue with amnesty for illegal immigrants in exchange for border wall funding as well as curbs on illegal immigration and the online ‘E-Verify' system.-- If the President accedes, this may be his ‘Merkel moment' --- reflective of the German chancellor who compromised on her nation's borders and rule of law with her now infamous (and subsequently dropped) ‘We Can Do It' call to let millions of migrants into Europe. -- She didn't just let them in, her policy encouraged them. One of the greatest ‘pull factors' in Europe's migrant crisis was the German leader's abdication of her duties towards her nation. From failing to consult the German parliament, to claiming that a mass of economic migrants were in fact “Syrian refugees” fit for high-skilled labour, Merkel irrevocably changed the face of her nation in one fell swoop; something candidate Trump seemed to understand.......

LA files to join California's sanctuary city lawsuit against DOJ
Los Angeles is trying to join California's lawsuit against the Department of Justice (DOJ) for threatening to withhold funding from sanctuary cities. -- The city filed legal claims in federal court Tuesday to join a lawsuit filed by the state and the city of San Francisco earlier this month over new policies on cooperating with federal authorities on undocumented immigrants, Reuters reported. -- Los Angeles called the policies "unconstitutional on their face” in the court filing. -- A federal judge would have to approve Los Angeles joining the suit. If the city is approved, it will become the third major city to sue the Trump administration over the sanctuary city funding threats. -- Attorney General Jeff Sessions announced last month that DOJ would withhold law enforcement grants from cities that don't allow federal authorities to access detention centers or give 48 hours notice to feds before releasing undocumented immigrants who have been arrested......

McClatchy: Trump Aides Plot Big Immigration Deal — That Breaks a Campaign Promise
From McClatchy: Donald Trump's top aides are pushing him to protect young people brought into the country illegally as children — and then use the issue as a bargaining chip for a larger immigration deal — despite the president's campaign vow to deport so-called Dreamers. -- The White House officials want Trump to strike an ambitious deal with Congress that offers Dreamers protection in exchange for legislation that pays for a border wall and more detention facilities, curbs legal immigration and implements E-verify, an online system that allows businesses to check immigration status, according to a half-dozen people familiar with situation, most involved with the negotiations. -- The group includes former and current White House chiefs of staff, Reince Priebus and John Kelly, the president's daughter, Ivanka Trump, and her husband, Jared Kushner, who both serve as presidential advisers, they said. Others who have not been as vocal publicly about their stance but are thought to agree include Vice President Mike Pence, who as a congressman worked on a failed immigration deal that called for citizenship, National Security Adviser H.R. First DREAMer who claims he was illegally deported gets his day in federal court
After six months of hiding and living in fear in his native Mexico, the first known DREAMer deported by the Trump administration gets his day in court Tuesday in hopes a federal judge will order his return to the United States. -- The fate of Juan Manuel Montes, 23, will be in the hands of U.S. District Judge Gonzalo Curiel, who was lambasted last year by then-presidential candidate Donald Trump. The judge will decide whether Montes was wrongfully deported by border agents. -- Curiel previously oversaw lawsuits against Trump University during the presidential campaign, prompting Trump to label him a "hater" and question whether Curiel could be objective because of his "Mexican" heritage, although the judge was born in Indiana.......

Prince William NAACP leader calls for Corey Stewart's resignation

Cozy Bailey convened an Aug. 21 press conference to indict Stewart's response to the Aug. 12 “Unite the Right” rally as “an invitation to white supremacists to bring their traveling road show of discrimination and hate to Prince William County.” -- Though police believe a man with neo-Nazi leanings was the one to plow into a crowd of counter-protesters at the event- --- killing one woman and injuring 19 other people --- Stewart has so far chosen to blame “the violent left” and echo President Donald Trump's comments about both sides of the demonstration bearing responsibility for its violence.......

Trump heads to Arizona to tout immigration crackdown and rally supporters
President Trump heads to Arizona to rally supporters Tuesday evening, but first he'll get close to the U.S. border with Mexico, to promote his signature crackdown on immigrants coming across illegally. -- Senior officials say Trump won't tour the actual line he has promised to fortify with a "big, beautiful" wall, at Mexico's expense, but he will be about seven miles from Mexican territory. There he'll meet with Border Patrol agents and inspect some of their tools: a Predator drone, river patrol boat, surveillance truck and other security equipment. -- Then Trump heads to Phoenix for the campaign-style rally that has some Republicans on edge, for fear he'll air both his gripes against the state's two Republican senators --- Jeff Flake, who's up for reelection next year, and John McCain --- and repeat the sort of racially charged rhetoric that put the president at the center of a furor after recent deadly protests in Charlottesville, Va.......

Huffington Post Misstatements
Many immigration hard-liners in Arizona bristle at the notion that their views indicate racial hostility. Glenn Spencer, the founder of the American Border Patrol, told HuffPost that Latino political leaders had made racially charged comments toward him in the past, when describing the declining place of white Americans as the country's demographics shift. (The SPLC classifies Spencer's organization as a hate group, which he disputes, saying his group focuses on technological solutions to border security.) -- "We're in a struggle over the issue of immigration," Spencer told HuffPost. "Any time we get this 'racism' cry, there's always some purpose to it. It's usually to defeat any attempt to secure our borders or enforce our immigration laws. It's to intimidate people."
The quote about racism is correct, but what I did tell the HuffPost is that Latino political leaders had made racially charged comments about taking over California, i.e., California is going to be a Hispanic state and anyone who doesn't like it should leave.” -- I told the HuffPost that California is now a Hispanic state because of illegal immigration --- and the subversion of our laws by liberals. His prospects are slim, considering Republicans lawmakers need the support of Democrats to pass a bill to fund the government. -- Trump has other options, however. -- If the president is unable to get funding for the wall, he will need another way to improve border security that Congress could agree to fund. California Writes New Chapter in Age-Old States' Rights Conflict
Tension between the federal government and its states has permeated American history from the earliest moments of the nation's founding 241 years ago. -- Drafting the U.S. Constitution was an exercise in balancing federal authority against “states' rights.” The Constitution's “supremacy clause” defined federal authority, for instance, while its 10th amendment guaranteed that states could exercise powers not reserved to the national government. -- The broad wording of both merely set the stage for centuries of political and judicial conflict over their meaning, punctuated by the nation's bloodiest war. -- Over those decades, “states' rights” evolved, in the minds of many, into code words for discrimination and/or repression. It was 1934 and fascism was on the march not only in Europe but in America. People who admired Adolf Hitler, who had taken power in Germany, formed Nazi organizations in the United States. -- The American Civil Liberties Union, represented by lawyers who were Jewish, faced an existential question: Should the freedoms it stood for since its founding in 1920 apply even to racist groups that would like nothing more than to strip them away? -- Ultimately, after much internal dissent, the ACLU decided: Yes, the principles were what mattered most. The ACLU would stand up for the free-speech rights of Nazis. -- “We do not choose our clients,” the ACLU's board of directors wrote in an October 1934 pamphlet called “Shall We Defend Free Speech for Nazis In America?” “Lawless authorities denying their rights choose them for us. To those who support suppressing propaganda they hate, we ask --- where do you draw the line?”......

Calexit III? New ballot measure plots another route to California independence
First there was Calexit. Then came Calexit II. -- On Thursday, people unhappy with California's place in the United States filed yet another proposed ballot measure that could lead to the Golden State striking out on its own. -- This time, the goal is convening a U.S. constitutional convention to overhaul what proponents call a moldy national blueprint out of step with life in California. -- The measure says a reworked Constitution should include a provision creating a “clear and reasonable path for states to achieve complete independence from the United States should any state so choose.” No state has become independent under the existing U.S. Constitution......

We're putting in a speed lane for immigration hearings
Can anything be done to chip away at the backlog of hearings for illegal aliens challenging their deportation? The Justice Department under Jeff Sessions seems to think so and they've already begun implementing some guidelines to move things along. This, of course, has opponents of immigration laws wringing their hands and complaining that a more efficient system equals less justice or something along those lines. Time Magazine picks up that tale this week. -- As with many stories dealing with illegal aliens, they begin by selecting the case of a poster child, obviously designed to elicit sympathy for the little guy fighting the system.......

Immigrants, Not Statues, Motivated Charlottesville March Organizer
During an August 15, 2017 news conference, Donald Trump said that within the group marching in Charlottesville that featured neo-Nazis and white nationalists were “very fine people” concerned only about Robert E. Lee's statue. We do not know if Mr. Trump includes Jason Kessler, the organizer of the “Unite the Right” rally, among those “very fine people.” If so, Trump may be mistaken. Immigration and its impact on white people appears to be what most motivates Jason Kessler. -- Before the “Unite the Right” march, Kessler was known as an anti-immigration writer and activist. “The rally was organized by Jason Kessler, a relative newcomer to the white nationalist scene who is well known in Charlottesville, where he has fought against the city's status as a sanctuary city for immigrants,” reported the New York Times.......

Two Main Objections to Immigration Restriction Unconvincing
There are two fundamental arguments put forward in support of mass immigration. Both treat immigrants not as actors with human agency or individual traits, but as abstract commodities to be used to achieve particular ideological or economic ends. -- The first type fall under the category of what we can label Historical Determinism. These arguments are variants of the premise that “America is a nation of immigrants,” which has as its conclusion the assertion that America's immigrant history precludes any restrictions on legal immigration in the present. -- Clearly this argument is not rational, as it holds that immigration policy set in the past can never be altered or undone by a future Congress. Not only is this offensive to the democratic underpinnings of America's constitutional system, it is beyond the ken of sane public policy. Unfortunately, sanity is often absent from the debate over U.S. immigration policy (QED Marco “No Limits” Rubio). ......
