California, San Francisco Sue Trump Administration Over Threat to Withhold Funds From 'Sanctuary Cities'
California and San Francisco officials said Monday they are suing the Trump administration, alleging federal threats to withhold funding from “sanctuary cities” are unconstitutional and violate the rights of residents.-- Atty. Gen. Xavier Becerra said the state and local jurisdictions in California receive $28 million annually in law enforcement grants from the federal government that could be withheld. He said President Trump's push to end the funding is “bullying. ---“It's a low blow to our men and women who wear the badge, for the federal government to threaten their crime-fighting resources in order to force them to do the work of the federal government when it comes to immigration enforcement,” the attorney general said at a San Francisco news conference.......

Rep. UN to Trump: Stop Detaining Illegal Aliens
The United Nations Human Rights Council is now demanding President Trump enact a full open borders policy that would release more than 350,000 illegal aliens and foreign refugees into the public. -- In a 23-page report by the U.N. Human Rights Council, Trump is requested to set free all foreign nationals who are currently awaiting immigration hearings in the United States, Reuters reported. -- “The Working Group is of the view that all administrative detention, in particular of immigrants in an irregular situation, should be in accordance with international human rights law; and that such detention is to be a measure of last resort, necessary and proportionate and be not punitive in nature, and that alternatives to detention are to be sought whenever possible,” the panel said.......

Spanish Beachgoer Was Kidnapped, Murdered in Mexican Border State, Police Confirm
Cd. Victoria, Tamps. -- Authorities confirmed the murder of a Spanish woman visiting with her family at a local beach in this border state. The region where gunmen kidnapped her and her remains were later found is seeing a spike in cartel skirmishes for control. -- Pilar Garrido Santamans was kidnapped by two gunmen on July 2 along a highway leading to the town of La Pesca, a small community by the Gulf of Mexico, Breitbart Texas reported. Two weeks ago, police found human remains in the rural community of Villa de Casas not far from the place of the kidnapping. Pedestrians watched from a footbridge as police secured the scene. -- The deaths came as Mexico's violence reached new heights with 2,234 murders in June, the country's deadliest month in at least 20 years, according to government data. Why Trump Is No Closer to Getting His Wall
President Trump wants lawmakers to sign off on something his own Department of Homeland Security can't yet provide. As Axios's Jonathan Swan reported last week, “sources close to Trump say he's dead serious about building an impressive wall and will go crazy when he realizes Congress has no plans to pay for it.” But as of now, there's no “it.” DHS doesn't even have plans for what such a wall would resemble, just weeks from a budget deadline and possible government shutdown in which border funding is a decisive issue. Notwithstanding the lack of appetite among Hill Republicans for lining the U.S.-Mexico border with concrete, it appears the president is putting the big and beautiful before the blueprints. -- These matters of expectations and timing already frustrated the White House on health reform. They also apply here. In March, U.S. Customs and Border Protection issued two solicitations for wall prototypes: one made of concrete, one potentially made of alternate materials with a see-through component, both in the ballpark of 30-feet high, and both “aesthetically pleasing” on the American side.......

Worried NYT Frets: 'Season of Fear' for 'Undocumented' in Iowa
Illegal immigrants (or rather, “undocumented immigrants”) remain safe under the rhetorical protection of the New York Times, if not the legal protection of American law, with the paper going so far as giving out tips for the “undocumented” to remain illegally in the “draconian” United States. -- The top of Sunday's Times front page featured a 3,000-word sympathetic tale, complete with huge photos, of an illegal immigrant family in Hampton, Iowa, choosing to self-deport after the husband was arrested. The only unflattering photo was one of Sheriff Linn Larson who has “pledged to run immigration checks on people in custody and cooperate with immigration detainer requests.” -- Reporter Jack Healy unfolded his long tale under the headline “Loving and Leaving America -- Stay, Hide, ‘Self-Deport'? In his final years as Maricopa County sheriff, Arpaio had emerged as a leading opponent of illegal immigration. -- “I am seriously considering a pardon for Sheriff Arpaio,” the president said Sunday, during a conversation with Fox News at his club in Bedminster, N.J. “He has done a lot in the fight against illegal immigration. On the Notion of Enfranchising Illegal Aliens
College Park, Md., a reliably liberal bastion and home to the main campus of the University of Maryland just outside the Washington, D.C., Beltway, apparently is mulling over enfranchising illegal aliens, according to the Baltimore Sun. -- As Sapna Rampersaud notes in National Review Online, this universal enfranchisement appears to be a coming trend for various "progressive" local governments. -- Chicago, the third largest city in the nation, is edging ever closer to that goal by promising to issue city identification cards to any and all comers provided they can give officials something (exactly what remains unclear) showing that they reside within its boundaries. One wonders whether Chicago officials have contemplated how quickly this will devolve into a free-for-all of fraud, with altered utility bills and bogus back-dated "rent" receipts being offered by sketchy landlords for a modest fee. As a former immigration agent, I know something about this: I lived through my agency's often-unsuccessful process of trying to winnow out all of the massive amount of fraud committed in the wake of the 1986 nationwide amnesty.......

Sanctuary for Whom?
President Donald Trump issued an executive order to stop subsidizing cities that obstruct immigration law. Chicago filed suit in response. Mayor Rahm Emanuel wants to continue collecting federal dollars while ignoring federal policy. --Chicago is a “sanctuary city.” That sounds nice, kind of like Oscar Schindler protecting Jews from the Nazis. It actually means protecting illegal aliens who commit crimes from being punished and deported. When President Donald Trump took office, some 300 jurisdictions, including 106 cities, actively interfered with federal law enforcement. -- The Chicago case arose from a drunk driver and illegal alien. Shortly after completing probation for a DUI offense, Saul Chavez ran over and killed Dennis McCann, a pedestrian headed to dinner with a friend. Surely Chavez deserved to pay for his crime.......

Thank Trump for America's return to real immigration enforcement
Over eight years, Barack Obama systematically dismantled our immigration enforcement apparatus. Remarkably, it only took Donald Trump 200 days as president to reverse the damage done by his predecessor and restore the rule of law. -- But wait, wasn't President Obama the “deporter-in-chief”? Hardly. -- In an effort to appear tough on illegal immigration while peddling the "Gang of Eight's" mass amnesty guest worker bill, the Obama administration began cooking the books by manipulating deportation statistics. In immigration law, deportations are the removal of illegal aliens from the interior of the country. To mask the fact that the Obama administration wasn't doing its job within our borders, it began counting “turn-arounds” --- illegal aliens detained close to the border by the Border Patrol—as interior removals. No previous administration has counted deportations this way because there is a clear distinction between border apprehensions and interior removals.......

Not So Long Ago, Democrats Favored Immigration Curbs
A prominent politician, announcing the results of a commission appointed to study immigration, urged Congress to significantly cut legal migrations to the United States. -- The rationale offered was that a flood of lesser-educated, low-skilled immigration drives down wages and hurts employment prospects for Americans with comparable skills and education. -- “What the commission is concerned about are the unskilled workers in our society in an age in which unskilled workers have far too few opportunities open to them,” the politician announced. “When immigrants are less well-educated and less-skilled, they may pose economic hardships to the most vulnerable of Americans, particularly those who are unemployed or under-employed.”..........

Why Does California Have The Nation's Highest Poverty Level?
With all the recent hoopla about California's record-low unemployment rate and the heady prospect of its becoming No. 5 in global economic rankings, it is easy to lose sight of another salient fact: It is the nation's most poverty-stricken state. -- So says the U.S. Census Bureau in its “supplemental measure” of poverty that is a far more accurate than the traditional measure because it takes into account not only income, but living costs. -- By the measure, just over 20 percent of Californians are living in poverty. The Public Policy Institute of California has devised its own measure, similar to the Census Bureau's, that not only validates the 20 percent figure, but tells us that another 20 percent of Californians are in “near-poverty,” which means they struggle to pay for food, shelter and other necessities of life....... Another view: Not even Trump believes in his big, beautiful wall
Most members of Congress, including many Republicans from states adjoining Mexico, have seen President Donald Trump's 2,000-mile wall along the southern border as a political device, not a serious proposal. Rightly so: The practical difficulties are enormous, and the benefits, supposing it could be done, minimal. The real question throughout has been how much money would be wasted pretending this project might work. --That question seems all the more pressing now we know that even the president doesn't believe in his wall. -- Last week, a leaked transcript of a phone call between Trump and Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto revealed that Trump understands that the wall is really just a political prop. A Smart Wall could take both Congress and President Trump off a collision course over the proposed building of a physical border wall between the U.S. and Mexico. -- While on the campaign trail, building a wall to curb illegal immigration became Trump's most popular pledge and, as icing on the cake, he promised he would make Mexico pay for it. -- Aside from his most fervent followers, few middle-of-the-road Americans took the talk seriously. -- Skeptics quickly pointed out that the border already has 650 miles of existing fencing, that building a physical wall would cost billions of dollars and probably be bogged down in court for years by lawsuits, is impossible in places because of topographic issues, and that the number of people crossing the border illegally has been declining in recent years. Not to mention that Mexico isn't going to pay for it. U.S. taxpayers will foot the bill.......

California Gov. A man who successfully evaded detection and detention by immigration officials is charged with assaulting two innocent women in Portland; his alleged crimes are tragic. That he was able to commit the alleged crimes at all defies the law and insults common sense. -- Let me be clear: I am addressing the problem of illegal aliens who commit criminal acts in our state. This is not about lawful alien residents or even about illegal aliens who simply come to Oregon to work. The reality is that criminals who are here illegally are being released into communities throughout the state on a daily basis. Some of these illegal aliens commit more crimes, and because of Oregon's "sanctuary" declaration, those aliens are not being arrested and prosecuted for violating federal immigration laws.......

Michael Savage: US No Longer in 'Age of Statue of Liberty'
Most Americans probably know these words, which are inscribed on the base of the Statue of Liberty along with the rest of the poem "The New Colossus" by Emma Lazarus. "The poem that you're referring to was added later". The French people would fund the statue, while the Americans agreed to pay for the construction of the pedestal. -- The Statue of Liberty, a gift from France for the USA centennial celebration, was dedicated by President Grover Cleveland in 1886. The poem appeared in Joseph Pulitzer's New York World and The New York Times. But he was wrong to imply such a divide between the two, because from the beginning, the poem was written for the statue. -- I was only recently reminded of the rest of Emma Lazarus' poem "The New Colossus", only part of which is usually quoted and universally known.
