Five arrested at Lawrence immigration office
Employing a newly aggressive approach, federal immigration authorities arrested five people Wednesday at the Lawrence office of US Citizenship and Immigration Services, an office where immigrants can seek legal residency. -- The arrests alarmed immigrant advocates who said a law enforcement operation at a government office marks a shift from past practices and could have a chilling effect on immigrants who are taking steps to obtain lawful residency. -- “They respond to an interview that was scheduled by the government, they listen to the government, show up when they're supposed to, and they're arrested,” said Susan Church, chair of the New England chapter of the American Immigration Lawyers Association. ......

TRUMP NOT SERIOUS ABOUT THE WALL
Bids to the government to be considered to build the border wall were submitted on April 4. According to the RFP, CBP was to take two weeks to winnow the number of bidders down --- and notify those who were not selected. -- Well, it's been three weeks and, as a bidder, I have heard nothing. -- It is beyond my imagination that CBP would actually pay people to go to San Diego and build a 30-foot-high solid concrete wall as a sample of what they would build. There is not going to be a concrete wall on the border and President Trump, and the CBP know it. They will not award one $ to do this.

Fairfax County, Va.: Sanctuary or No? The Washington Post ran a brief article about Virginia's Fairfax County, one of those that constitute part of the greater metro area around our nation's capital, titled "Fairfax County stops short of sanctuary policy in new immigration guidelines". The county supervisors allegedly opted out and instead voted for a wishy-washy, neither fish-nor-fowl policy. As the Post put it, "Virginia's largest jurisdiction on Tuesday declared itself a welcoming and accepting place for immigrants but steered clear of the word 'sanctuary,' a term that could spark a backlash from the Trump administration." -- I say allegedly opted out because later in the article, the Post says "County police are prohibited from arresting anyone solely based on immigration status, but they cooperate with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement in cases involving serious crimes."......

NYC Council Asks Mayor for $12 Million in Taxpayer Money to Pay for Illegal Aliens Legal Fees

Included in these costs are $12 million to pay for the legal representation for illegal aliens who are removable under federal law. -- Removal proceedings, as well as asylum and other adjustment of status proceedings, are civil proceedings. Publicly funded legal representation for civil proceedings is generally something that is not provided to U.S. citizens who face civil legal issues, such as foreclosures, evictions proceedings, child custody cases, or divorce proceedings. In debate over 'sanctuary state' bill, trust L.A. sheriff's judgment

A consensus has emerged among a large body of police departments that relationships with the immigrant community would be impaired if local police were seen not as guardians of the peace and enforcers of state and local law but as colluding with enforcers of federal immigration law. -- The California Trust Act of 2014 codified this policy by drawing a clear line between Immigration and Naturalization Service enforcement and local policing practices. -- But this consensus does not apply to undocumented individuals who have been convicted of serious crimes.......

U.S. MUST CURB INFLUX OF ALIENS
On November 27, 1979, the Los Angeles Police Commission, following directions from the Los Angeles City Council, issued Special Order 40, prohibiting cooperation between the Los Angeles Police Department and the Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS). Special Order 40, in effect, created a sanctuary for illegal aliens in Los Angeles, a city that will soon have a Mexican majority. -- In the 1996 Illegal Immigration Reform and Immigrant Responsibility Act, Congress specifically prohibited restrictions between federal and local law enforcement. Still, Special Order 40 remains in effect. It is anarchy of the elected. -- Many argue that immigration is a federal problem. When it comes to immigration law enforcement, the old adage, "all politics is local," rings true. --When illegal aliens began to appear on the streets of Farmingville citizens protested. When proposals were advanced to use taxpayer money to build a day labor center, they protested even louder. And, as is the nature of politicians, "when they feel the heat, they see the light." The day labor center was defeated. -- Had there been citizens with "Long Island backbone" in 1979 Los Angeles, I am convinced we would not have the crisis of illegal immigration now facing President Bush. -- SEE ENTIRE LETTER
