A Time for Honest Assessment
Last Thursday, Elbit Systems of America, LLC issued a press release saying: "Elbit Systems of America, LLC announced today that its Integrated Fixed Towers (IFT) border surveillance system, deployed outside of Nogales, Arizona, has successfully met milestones for system acceptance testing and conditional acceptance pursuant to its contract with the Department of Homeland Security's Customs and Border Protection agency (CBP)."
Saturday American Border Patrol took aerial photos and GoPro videos of the new towers. We will need more time to go through all the data, however a first-look suggests possible problems with these Integrated Fixed Towers. For example, the towers are situated within very hilly terrain and heavy brush and forests, possibly limiting the field-of-view of these cameras.
We encourage Congress and the Governmental Accountability Office to take a close look at the acceptance testing of these Integrated Fixed Towers to make sure they are evaluated using measures of the degree to which they assist in establishing operational control of the border.
It is time for an honest assessment of border security.
